Balkans look to Norwegian hydropower research for renewable energy inspiration
The Balkan region gets most of its electricity from coal-fired power plants but is now looking for solutions that can give them a greener energy system.
This week, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and Serbian Ministers of Finance and Energy visited NTNU and SINTEF. At the Waterpower laboratory the delegation was presented with the latest hydropower research from HydroCen. Among other things they got to hear how hydropower can contribute to increased flexibility in a renewable energy system, and how new technology can prevent aquatic life from the fatal "divers’ disease". In the DeGas project, researchers have found that ultrasound can prevent fish from dying of "gas bubble disease" in rivers downstream power plants.
Earlier this month, several representatives from the Norwegian hydropower industry and management participated in the Norway - Western Balkans Renewable Energy Conference where the aim was to explore the possibilities for investment and cooperation in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
